Grass Planting Techniques in Bio Engineering

It is the simplest and easiest way of bio-engineering to protect the soil erosion. This technique provides a surface cover and catch debris thus reduce the speed of runoff, , thereby armouring and reinforcing the slope soil.
There are mainly two ways of Grass Plating:

 1. Contour/Horizontal

     

Specification of Contour Grass Plating:

• Suitable with ground slope upto 60 Degree.
• Horizontal spacing between herbs/shrubs shall be 10 cm 
• Vertical spacing between herbs/shurbs could be variate from 30 to 100 cm (depends on soil)
• Grass should be lopped off the ground by 10 cm.

    

Construction Method:

• Prepare the site cleaning ruts, wilds etc. well in advance of planting  
• Mark out the lines with bars/rods/pick, using a tape measure
• Split the grass plants out to give the maximum planting material.
• With a planting rod, make a hole just big enough for the roots. 
• Place the grass into the hole 
• Start grass planting from top advancing downwards.
• Scatter a few handfuls manuer around the grasses
• Watering shall be done next day manually in case of no rain.

Limitation: formation of rill erosion in case of high runoff.

 2. Down slope/Vertical

  

Specification of Down slope/ Vertical Grass Plating:

• Suitable with ground slope less than 60 degree.
• Horizontal spacing between herbs/shrubs shall be 50 cm 
• Vertical spacing between herbs/shurbs should be 10 cm.
• Vertical spacing between herbs serves as drain fror directional flow.
• Grassed should be lopped off the ground by 10-15 cm.
